Job description

The MLRO is responsible for ensuring that the company and its clients comply with all applicable Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (CFT) laws, regulations, and directives. The MLRO acts as the main point of contact for staff, service providers, and regulators (MFSA, FIAU) on all AML/CFT matters, and is responsible for the effective implementation of AML/CFT policies, procedures, and controls.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable AML/CFT laws, regulations, and directives, including keeping abreast of new or amended legislation.
Act as MLRO for regulated entities and communicate directly with the MFSA and FIAU as required.
Receive, assess, and report suspicious transactions (STRs) to the FIAU in a timely manner, and respond promptly to requests from the FIAU and MFSA.
Oversee and submit the Business Risk Assessment (BRA), Customer Risk Assessment (CRA), and Risk Evaluation Questionnaire (REQ) as required by the FIAU.
Ensure all AML and KYC requirements and procedures are followed according to internal policies and regulatory standards.
Manage transaction monitoring for fraud and AML issues, including investigation and escalation of alerts.
Support regulatory and statutory audits, and facilitate compliance visits by regulators.
Monitor and report AML risks and compliance gaps in relation to internal and external regulations.
Maintain an AML compliance calendar and ensure timely submission of all legal and regulatory returns.
Publish written guidelines to staff and service providers on the appropriate implementation of laws, regulations, rules, and standards through policies and procedures.
Present MLRO reports during Board meetings and provide annual/ad-hoc AML/CFT compliance reports to senior management and the Board.
Develop and deliver AML/CFT training programmes for staff and relevant service providers.
Regularly review and update AML/CFT policies and procedures, at least annually or when regulatory changes occur.
Maintain comprehensive records of AML/CFT activities, including internal reports, STRs, and compliance documentation.
Manage a small team, providing leadership, guidance, and support.
Review onboarding documentation for clients and investors, ensuring robust due diligence and risk assessment.
Avoid conflicts of interest and act independently and with integrity at all times.
Any other duties as requested by senior management.
Job requirements
Degree in Law, Accountancy, Commerce, or a Diploma in AML and Compliance.
5+ Years of experience as MLRO
The MLRO must act with the highest standards of integrity, diligence, and professionalism at all times.
Preferably holds or has held a similar position and is PQ’d by the MFSA.
Demonstrable experience in AML/CFT compliance within the financial services sector, ideally in the fund industry.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and keeping up to date with evolving AML/CFT threats and regulatory changes.
Skills Requirements:
Strong understanding of Maltese company law and AML/CFT regulations.
Working knowledge of MFSA and FIAU requirements and regulatory expectations.
Excellent written and spoken English.
Ability to act independently and with integrity, avoiding conflicts of interest.
Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and influence others.
High attention to detail and organisational skills.
